Book Review: Strategic Supply Chain Management

Strategic Supply Chain Management: the Five Disciplines for Top Performance

By Shoshanah Cohen, Joseph Roussel
McGraw Hill Professional

Supply chain management as a field of study and practice has come a long way, though the field is over 150 years old. A book on supply chain strategy would definitely go beyond theory and also would add something very new to the collective knowledge. After reading this book, I really appreciate the authors’ depth and breadth of experience. Numerous examples are cited in it from diverse industries, explaining what is unique in their supply chains. Cases like Zara, HP, Wal Mart and Lilly are often cited to make very important points.

These are the five disciplines for top SCM performance, as mentioned and explained in the book:

Core discipline 1: View your Supply Chain as a Strategic Asset

Core discipline 2: Develop an end-to-end process architecture

Core discipline 3: Design your organization for performance

Core discipline 4: Build the right collaborative model

Core discipline 5: Use metrics to drive business success

I am sure top SCM leaders would find this book very informative.
